2 Bedroom House in Castel San Niccolo, Arezzo

Casa Giardino is in the very small village of Spalanni in the "secret" valley known as the Casentino and situated 50 km (28 Miles) east of Florence. There are ancient stone cottages, nestling above the larger villages of Strada di Casentino and Castel San Niccolo. Spalanni originated within the historical confines of a 13th Century convent and the unique chapel is open to visitors through the summer.
We enjoy spectacular views across the valley and the hills beyond. There is a nearby grocery shop selling local produce but a wider range of local shops are to be found in Strada only five minutes away by car. There are two banks with ATM; the inspiring bakery also has a deliciously stocked delicatessen and grocery sections; the butcher who is a specialist in the Casentino steak; vegetable and fruit shops; restaurants and bars; dry cleaner and newsagents etc.
The town of Bibbiena is about 20 minutes drive and Arezzo, which is the provincial capital, is less than one hour’s drive away.
The house is well placed to simply settle into the pace of calm rural life but also a perfect base to explore the great treasures of Tuscany. Visits to Florence, Chianti, Sienna, Cortona and even Rome can be reached by train from Arezzo in an hour.
This large house has been extensively restored and refurbished to a very high standard whilst maintaining authenticity and atmosphere. The house is ideal for families with children of all ages and the 1.5m deep pool is a welcome attraction. Dogs are very welcome here too and the gardens are safely enclosed.
The fitted kitchen is generously equipped for those who love cooking. The cooker has four gas rings and a large grill and electric oven and there is also a microwave and fridge/freezer.
It is great to sample the local Tuscan food in the numerous superb local restaurants but try the fabulous local produce to create special Tuscan dishes of your own and relax under the cooling shade of the grapevine terrace or enjoy the grand views on your own beautiful and private balcony.
There are two double bedrooms within Casa Giardino, the second bedroom can be configured into a double or twin bedded room. We can also accommodate a 5th person and the bed will be set upstairs in the sitting room.
The first floor sitting room is comfortable and newly refurbished, with a large television and a DVD player. We supply a good selection of DVDs and books for our guest’s enjoyment.
The house combines a sense of history with the added convenience of modern living. The bright and sunny bathroom at the front of the house is fitted with shower, basin, toilet and bidet. We supply plenty of bathroom towels and also extra towels for use around the pool.
The property has full central heating for the colder months and in the dining room there is an efficient wood burner in a traditional Tuscan fireplace. Logs are plentiful.
We have unlimited WIFI and there is free access available in Strada and at the local bars and restaurants.
Outside we enjoy large and beautiful private gardens, a large 8x5m and 1.5m deep swimming pool and sun terraces for your own private use. Guests returning after a long hot day of sightseeing, can dip into the refreshing sun warmed pool. It is wonderful to relax in the peaceful garden and laze the day away in the sunshine or under the shade of our fig tree, olive trees, or in the cool ambiance of our house.
In the gardens there are interesting features and aromatic herbs and trees: fig, pear, cherry, plum, cherry and olive trees and a canopy of grapevines. During 2016, we planted two new Cherry trees for future generations to enjoy. When in season, the fruit and garden herbs are plentiful and there for our guests to enjoy in abundance.....July for the cherries....July and August for plums and pears and later in August and September the wonderful figs are ripe and eating them straight off the tree when warmed by the sun is simply amazing. Towards the end of the year there are also the walnuts to enjoy.

Summary: The house and the garden were beautiful. We had everything we wanted and needed. If you're looking for a quiet and peaceful place on earth - this is the right place. A car is highly recommended and although Florence and other cities didn't seem so far away, it took some time to reach the highway. Richard was an exellent host, every morning he cleaned up the private swimming pool. He also provided restaurant recommendations to us and which places were worth a trip. Whenever we had questions, he was there. Otherwise, our group always had our private time and space. Thank you very much!

Summary: This is the perfect spot to relax, almost no tourists but nature, birds, and a nice pool in a wonderful garden. You will need a car, and it takes time to get to the place coming from Florence. But once you are there there is the Casentino National Forest for hiking, Arezzo is an amazing must see city, Poppi is just 15 minutes away and a wonderful place. And when you come back to the house you will hear the cuckoo and the deer in the forest. Richard provides you with everything you need in the house and is always helping with information and tips.

Summary: If you need to switch off, if you need to unplug from your digital world for a while - this is the place for you. In the middle of a local settlement, no other tourists, local shops, everything within a 5-10 minute car journey... Property is very rustic, pool is great, we travelled with a dog and it was no issue..

Summary: We’ve just had a week at Richard’s villa and cannot recommend it enough. The location is beautiful, up a mountain. It’s remote enough to feel alone, but with a scattering of homes around it you, I still felt safe. Beautiful views all around. It’s in a fantastic location to explore Tuscany, although we enjoyed the villa so much, we only ventured out a couple of times to some small villages, which were very beautiful and very Italian. The owner, Richard, was on hand to offer invaluable help with his knowledge of the area. Although he lives in the adjoining property, we never, ever, felt that our privacy was compromised. Richard was discreet and helpful. He supplied some unexpected welcome supplies on arrival (eggs, cheese, milk Prosecco and more) and even baked for us twice whilst we were there. The villa itself is lovely. It’s really quaint and Italian. It doesn’t have air conditioning (which worried me at first) but as Richard had already assured me, it wasn’t needed. It was perfectly cool on a night. The kitchen is well equipped to cook, and there is also a bbq area underneath a grapevine covering. There’s an additional seating area on a terrace upstairs too, which we tended to use on an evening. The swimming pool is immaculate and a perfect temperature. Just lovely to cool down in. There are areas in full sun around the pool to sunbathe, but also plenty of places with shade. We are a family of 5 (kids aged 9,7 and 4) and it was perfect for us. I would recommend it to anyone though. So, all in all, we had a fabulous week in a lovely villa. Richard was an amazing host and his villa is an absolute credit to him. We hope to visit again. If we visit Tuscany again, we will be returning to this villa.

Summary: Just returned from a very relaxing two week stay at Casa Gardina, which is a well maintained property perfect for a family of four and accurately matches the description on HomeAway. Kids especially loved the pool area with it's inflatables and loungers and was quite private from the owner's garden thanks to a mature thick hedge. Richard, the owner, was on hand for help and advice throughout our holiday, and his easygoing and pleasant manner made it a stress free fortnight.

Summary: Beautiful villa, stunning views, gorgeous secluded pool. The owners were on hand if we needed anything. A perfect get away. Only issue was no air con or fans and we went in a heat wave !

Summary: We were very warmly welcomed bij Richard, the owner. He had provided a filled fridge with the first necessary groceries and a stuffend fruit basket. The next day he gave us some tips to discover the area. The owner lives next door and is always accessible, but that is not at all disturbing. The house is cool inside and is very fully furnished. Is has good beds, A whole complete kitchen (only the dishwasher is missing, but I survived;)) a bathroom with a nice view and upstairs a recreationroom with a couch, a big tv and a dvd player. Also the pool is lovely for swimming and relaxing and has enough possibilities to sit in the sun or in the shade. In the lovely village one is super friendly, especially at the bakery, where we regularly got something extra with our order. At Richards recommendation we have eaten at The Street Saloon in the village, and we really had "the best pizza ever"!! We have been to Pisa for one day, Beautiful city, but actually drive a bit too long for a day. We also made a tour around Sienna, with really stunning views (!) and Sienna itself also was lovely. In short we had a wonderful holiday!

Summary: Casa Giardino is a lovely house in a tiny hilltop village in the heart of rural Tuscany. The house itself is very tastefully decorated and extremely well equipped. There was nothing we needed. There were even some essential food items (and prosecco) in the fridge for when we arrived, which was a godsend as the supermarket had closed. The views from the balcony were beautiful and the location very peaceful. The pool was perfect for us and our children and was well used every day. There were plenty of loungers and towels available as well as plastic glasses and crockery for use around the poolside. Richard, the owner could not have been more helpful, offering advice on places to visit, best supermarket, where to go and eat etc and even accompanied us on some of our evenings out which was most enjoyable. We feel like we made a friend and hope that we can one day return again to stay in that beautiful house.

Summary: We really enjoyed our stay at Casa Giardino. It is situated in a very peaceful spot, perfect as a place to unwind but also good as a start point for exploring the area. You do need a car to stay here but I'd imagine that would be taken as read. The property has everything needed to cook full meals (which we did) and various options of where to eat them. There are also some cracking delis nearby from which to source excellent ingredients. Richard was very helpful throughout our stay - I would recommend Casa Giardino to anyone looking for a laid back stay in the heart of rural Tuscany.
